Anointing of the Sick

By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. and indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ (CCC 1499).
Catechism of the Catholic Church about the Sacrament

Receiving the Sacrament

Anyone may receive the sacrament of the anointing of the sick at any time. There are opportunities to receive the sacrament after Mass during the year; dates will be announced.

Those suffering a serious illness or facing surgery are especially encouraged to receive this sacrament; it is not required that death be imminent. Viaticum is the name that refers to the final reception of Eucharist by those who are near death. It is often celebrated in conjunction with the anointing of the sick.
